Observe Advent (Day 2): Humility

Humility is not in vogue these days–we’re proud to be American and have pride in our sports teams. We rarely talk about how humbled we are that something good happened–instead, we’re proud of it. It’s hard to be humble!

Yet Advent calls us to lay down our pride and take up the humility of Christ. We’re reminded that

The Mighty One…has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty. (Luke 1:49-53, NRSV)

So, don’t give into the temptation to make everything self-absorbed and self-enriching. Instead, practice humility today. Follow in the footsteps of Mary, who rejoiced in the God who turns things upside down!
